Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
What is it?
Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that amplifies the natural growth factors your body uses to heal tissue. The treatment uses a patient’s own blood cells to accelerate healing or growth in a specific area.
Platelets are well-known for their clotting abilities, but they also contain growth factors that can trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration or healing in the treated area.
The idea is that injecting PRP into damaged tissues will stimulate your body to grow new, healthy cells and promote healing.
To create platelet-rich plasma, a blood sample is obtained from the patient and placed into a device called a centrifuge that rapidly spins the sample, separating out the other components of the blood from the platelets and concentrating them within the plasma.
